Sweeney Todd was a great role for Johnny, especially after the flying-in-twenty-directions-at-once Jack. Todd still has several over-the-top moments, but it's a bit more subtle than his recent roles. The sea-side sequence is one to watch for, as Johnny will have you howling. You want to be Mrs. Lovett, to soothe and coo him out of his misery, to make him give up the past for what's right in front of him, even as you know better.
And Mrs. Lovett? *dies happily* Helena, you have been on the short list for years, but with this one? You're at No.3 now, sweetie! OMG, what a performance! And I adored her in every other film I've seen her in, but this? What is wrong with him? This character broke my heart into a million pieces, then brushed them out the shop door onto the stoop with a smile. I wish I could narrow down Helena's best moments to just a few, but I can't. *blows a kiss*
I'd buy this film for the performances and over-all look, because it's just lovingly done. The dark side of London hasn't looked lovelier to me since Bram Stoker's Dracula and From Hell. And the costumes? And the songs? But the ending is a killer and there are several moments you do not expect. Myself, the ending broke my heart, but some would say that it's just as well that it ended that way.
And omitting a few moments, I would have to say that Todd/Lovett would have to be a new OTP for me.
As it is, I'd be happy with a Lovett/Me OTP. *grins*
5 stars, but don't go if squeamish or tender-hearted! I wanted to sob my heart out at the end, but the moment I speak of came far too fast to react. Especially since I wasn't warned.
