OMG, What An Amazing Mixed Bag... (Sweeney Todd)
What a rollercoaster that was! While I was utterly charmed by nearly all of it, I can understand the violence and blood warnings. There certainly was alot of the red stuff. Burton was at the top of his game, as he mostly is. I venture to say that this was one of his best live-actioners. He breaks your heart several times along the way, but doesn't he always? The humor is extremely dark in this one, especially in one sequence involving the duet between Todd and Antony to 'Joanna'. But you can't help laughing even as you watch it happen. He does a brilliant job of mixing the horror of what they are doing with the comedy of the piece.

Sweeney Todd was a great role for Johnny, especially after the flying-in-twenty-directions-at-once Jack. Todd still has several over-the-top moments, but it's a bit more subtle than his recent roles. The sea-side sequence is one to watch for, as Johnny will have you howling. You want to be Mrs. Lovett, to soothe and coo him out of his misery, to make him give up the past for what's right in front of him, even as you know better.

And Mrs. Lovett? *dies happily* Helena, you have been on the short list for years, but with this one? You're at No.3 now, sweetie! OMG, what a performance! And I adored her in every other film I've seen her in, but this? What is wrong with him? This character broke my heart into a million pieces, then brushed them out the shop door onto the stoop with a smile. I wish I could narrow down Helena's best moments to just a few, but I can't. *blows a kiss*

I'd buy this film for the performances and over-all look, because it's just lovingly done. The dark side of London hasn't looked lovelier to me since Bram Stoker's Dracula and From Hell. And the costumes? And the songs? But the ending is a killer and there are several moments you do not expect. Myself, the ending broke my heart, but some would say that it's just as well that it ended that way.

And omitting a few moments, I would have to say that Todd/Lovett would have to be a new OTP for me.

As it is, I'd be happy with a Lovett/Me OTP. *grins*

5 stars, but don't go if squeamish or tender-hearted! I wanted to sob my heart out at the end, but the moment I speak of came far too fast to react. Especially since I wasn't warned.

I loved it, too! I went in knowing lots of the songs but having never seen the actual show. I had a professor who's favorite show was Sweeny and she msade all the guys sing songs from the show at one point of another. That said, I got chills every time "Joanna" started and am pleased to report that after years of knowing that song I finally UNDERSTAND that song! But you are right that the seaside moment is the best. Especially the wedding. CRACK ME UP!

However, unlike you, I thought the "gore" of it was fakey and I really didn't see why it got an "R" rating. The only thing I can come up with is that with an "R" rating it will keep away millions of Pirates fan gurls age 10- 11 who would talk their moms into taking them to see it were it PG-13. I don't think a 10 year old would get Sweeny Todd. You do need to be a bit older to really get it. Still, fake blood aside... what was "R" about it? He said S%$# four times and... that's it.

Honestly, I didn't really think the gore too realistic as much as the fact that I know people who saw it that said that it was too overt. Me? Honestly? Anissa and I were laughing our heads off during the duet. "One slit, two , three...okay, Tim's going to pan away now...OMG, four! Five! OMG! He's going to keep shooting them! *dies laughing*"

The violence was pretty over-the-top, but there was a moment or two where I winced. And I hated what happened to Mrs. Lovett. Maybe it's because I've been there before, excepting the 'dead' wife.

And I think the rating was more for the 'bloody' images and the ending.
